Two youth groups travelled to Whidbey Island in order to spend a January weekend at Camp Casey exploring their faith and strengthening their relationships.
The groups, Northwest Baptist Church from Bellingham and Trinity Lutheran Church and Schools from Lynnwood spent the weekend holding their respective winter retreats at Camp Casey.
Northwest Baptist Church brought more than 20 youth and five adults for a weekend retreat where they stayed in Company Quarters G and utilized Classroom B for their meetings. Steve Wilson, youth director at Northwest Baptist, said the Company Quarters provides a great option for their teens, with girls sleeping upstairs and the boys downstairs.
The retreat provides an opportunity to “get away and focus on fellowship together and focus on God’s word,” Wilson said.
Northwest Baptist has held its winter youth retreats at Camp Casey since at least 2015. Wilson said the retreat consists of four small group Bible studies along with free time where the youth can explore the remains of a military base at Fort Casey State Park located adjacent to the conference center.
“There’s a lot of different things for kids to do,” Wilson said.
For the teens from Trinity Lutheran, “it’s a highlight for the winter as far as retreats and trips go,” said David Greenlee, minister of faith formation at Trinity Lutheran Church and Schools. January’s retreat marked the first time since before the pandemic that Trinity Lutheran’s youth groups visited Camp Casey. Many groups, such as this one, have returned to their regularly scheduled events at Casey.
The Trinity Lutheran youth stayed at the Bachelor Officers Quarters. With room to sleep up to 51 individuals, plus space for meeting, dining, and cooking, this building worked as a “one-building-does-it-all” fit for the youth group. They were sure to take advantage of the meeting space in order to hold their worship service on Sunday morning. A speaker was on hand to talk with the teens, and they had their own cook to prepare meals for their group, Greenlee said.
“Everything is kind of in one place,” Greenlee said of using the Bachelor Officer’s Quarters. He added everyone enjoyed spending time together as a group.
